『浅岡　咲子』展

絵画の強さについて、いつ頃から気にするようになったのかおぼえてはいない。

３５年ほど前にジュネーヴの画廊で－誰かの具象的な絵だった－「これは強い」とカタコトのフランス語で言ったらすぐに通じたので拍子抜けしたことがある。佐倉の川村記念美術館から中東に売られていったバーネット・ニューマン畢生の大作《アンナの光》の溶鉱炉のような赤が懐かしい。強さとは、色とかたちのせめぎ合い、つまりフォーマリズムの別称とも言えるだろう。

浅岡咲子の荒削りだが、戦士が全身を奮い立たせているような必死の画面を前にして、そんなことを考えた。

In Geneva, about thirty five years ago, I came across a figural painting in a gallery, and said in a broken French, “This one is really strong.” I didn’t know the reason why, but the unexpected was that it was well understood. As for the painting’s strength, I remember the field in red extended over the Barnett Newman’s masterpiece, Anna’s Light, reminding me of a flame in the furnace. The painting of a monumental size had been in the permanent collection of Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art (Sakura City), and was sold off to Middle East.
From a Formalist point of view, the tension we find in paintings might mean the struggle between colors and forms. This is what I thought about, faced with Asaoka Sakiko’s works, unrefined and yet impressive like a woman warrior stirring herself up into the final battle.
