６月１９日/早春のロンドンでの事。友人の家を訪ねるために花屋に買い物に出掛けた。もう一人の友人は、ずっと私の左側を歩いていた。上記写真はその際の風景写真である。真ん中の白いライン。これがちょっとした問題になった。しばらく行くと、自転車の絵が描いてある。自転車優先レーンなのである。私は全く知らなかった。この長閑な風景は何の不安もないのだが、僅か２分くらい前に命を落としそうになった。といえば大袈裟か。右側のレーンを凄い勢いでロードレーサーが走って来た。当然、避けてくれると日本人は考えた。ところが、真っ直ぐやって来る。心のなかで変だと、緊張感が走る。間近に迫ると、相手の表情はかなり険しい。そこで日本人は立ち止まった。凄い形相のまま、彼は去って行った。しかも、私を避けずに、かなり至近距離を 。日本人は自転車専用レーンを知らなかった。日本を田舎だとは思わないが、自転車のマナーはかなり悪い。自転車が都市を走る環境整備は最悪だ。この震災を境にかなり愛用者が増えたらしいが、実は日本の方が対自転車の危険性は高い。何故なら、ロンドンではレーンで区切られルールを守りさせすれば至極安全なのである。実に怖い体験ではあったが。
